FIELD NOTES / FLY

A one-page project brief

Use one page to describe the current work, the desired change and the available conditions.

What is the task?

Describe the current method, who uses the result and how often the work occurs. Start with the task rather than a software or model choice.

What needs to improve?

Choose one or two priorities, such as locating information, repeated entry or progress confirmation. Explain how improvement could be judged.

Which inputs are available?

List file types, locations, versions and redacted examples. Keep sensitive source text out of the brief.

Which actions need approval?

Name the reviewer, records that must not be changed and outputs that must not be sent automatically.

What should be delivered?

Distinguish instructions, static pages, software, configuration and continuing support. Discuss timing, budget and third-party charges separately.
